Microsoft Launches Rebranded Public Client

June 20, 2006

By InstantMessagingPlanet.com Staff

Microsoft has launched the newest version of its IM software, re-branding the client and adding a number of features.

The company yesterday released Windows Live Messenger, replacing MSN Messenger as its public IM client. The new software includes enhanced VoIP (define) functionality, file sharing using a shared folders interface, full-screen video chat and tighter integration between contact list and address book information.

Marking an ongoing trend found in several IM and VoIP tools, Messenger Live features the ability to integrate with select cordless phones, providing contact list information and the ability to launch a VoIP session with online contacts from the same phone used to make landline calls.

The release is part of a larger re branding effort on Microsoft's part, moving a number of its older MSN-branded offerings under the "Windows Live" umbrella.
