LASERSTATION PRISM W DESKTOP QUESTIONS

LASERSTATION PRISM W GENERAL QUESTIONS

Technology-wise, what makes LaserStation Prism W better than ordinary PCs?

The technology benefits are the same as with LaserStation P/C.  Behind the locked doors and HVAC controlled environment of the data center reside LaserStation Prism W’s rackmount processors, memory, hard drives, and network connections – essentially all the elements that produce heat and noise.  Data on LaserStation Prism W is secure.  Users are not in the same room as their hard drives.  They have no physical access to their machines.  The person who does have physical access is the network administrator, who can do maintenance, upgrades and replacements in the data center without ever having to visit the users’ work areas.

Business-wise, what makes LaserStation Prism W better than ordinary PCs?

You buy graphics adapters instead of full-blown computers, so the cost savings are enormous.  A single fiber optics cable from the LaserStation computer to the LS device allows up to four users to be connected over long distance (up to 250 meters).  This reduces the need and cost of having to install four long cable runs.  Instead you have one long and four short cable runs. The biggest benefit, as with LaserStation P/C, is that the computer and its data are secure.

How does the product work?

A Windows XP license is loaded on the LaserStation computer.  The XP license allows multiple displays through preemptive multitasking support.  An additional specialized multi-session BeTwin license from Thinsoft is loaded on top of XP that allows multiple logins to address multiple peripheral devices (graphics ports and USB ports).  User profiles are created on each computer.  The set up is very straightforward.  Once the profiles are created, the computer assigns the PCI and USB devices.

LASERSTATION PRISM W DESKTOP QUESTIONS

What graphics support is recommended for each user?

LaserStation Prism W features graphics cards with 32MBVRAM for standard office applications.  If high resolution graphics are needed, Cubix recommends a graphics adapter with 256MB of video RAM per user to optimize performance.  Graphics adapters with more video RAM will increase the supported resolutions but may be overkill for standard office applications.

How are the USB devices assigned?

Each user must have a USB mouse and keyboard.  That may take two ports at the LS device with direct connections.  Or one port if the USB keyboard supports a USB mouse connection.  Therefore, 4 USB ports, which are on-board the LS, can support 4 users.

Can each user have speakers too?

USB speakers also take a USB port.  This can be accomplished by using a USB keyboard that supports a USB mouse and headset. Cubix provides this keyboard as part of the LaserStation product line.

How far can the users be from the LS device?

A standard USB segment length is 16 feet (without amplifiers).  A standard video cable can be up to 50 feet.  Therefore, a centrally located LS device can support a distance of 32 feet (two 16 foot radiuses) using standard cables.  Distances can be increased with amplifiers on the cables.
